Understand the thought
Meaning in plain English
People who are comfortable may assume everyone else is comfortable too. Your own conditions can make another person’s needs harder to notice.
What the words are saying
Warmth represents a need already met. The speaker who feels warm overlooks the possibility that someone nearby is cold, because personal experience has become the measure of everybody’s situation. The same mistake can occur with money, time, access or support. The proverb asks a person making decisions to check what others actually have rather than extrapolating from their own convenience. It does not accuse every comfortable person of indifference. Its practical lesson is to ask, observe and make room for differences that may remain invisible until people are invited to explain them.
Everyday example
A organiser assumes all guests can drive until asking about travel and discovering that several need a venue near public transport.
When to use it
Use it when personal comfort is being mistaken for a condition shared by everyone.
What it does not mean
Other people’s needs should be checked directly rather than guessed from appearances.
