Meaning in plain English
Following instructions may appear to protect someone from blame. The proverb voices that promise strongly, but obedience does not establish that the instruction or the resulting action is right.
What the words are saying
Bidden places the direction with someone else, while never to blame suggests that complying removes responsibility. Read critically, the saying describes the reassurance offered by obedience. An instruction may be unclear, mistaken or inappropriate, and its giver may not understand what carrying it out entails. A useful response asks what was requested, whether it fits the task and what concerns need to be raised. Following an agreed procedure can help accountability, but it does not make the consequences disappear. The proverb’s absolute language should therefore not be treated as a guarantee of innocence or a demand to comply regardless of harm.
Everyday example
A trainee is told to delete an old project folder but notices that current work is inside it; they pause and ask the supervisor to confirm what should be retained.
When to use it
Use it when examining the claim that following orders removes personal responsibility.
What it does not mean
Obedience is not automatic justification; clarify uncertainties and consider the effects of the instruction.
