Meaning in plain English
A protective step comes too late to prevent a loss that has already happened. Take care before a foreseeable problem rather than relying on a remedy afterwards.
What the words are saying
The door would have kept the horse inside if it had been secured earlier. Once the animal is gone, locking it cannot undo that particular theft. The proverb highlights the timing of prevention: a sensible precaution may lose its immediate purpose when delayed until after the event. It can be used to review why a safeguard was missing or encourage earlier attention next time. The saying’s dismissive wording should not imply that later action is pointless altogether. A new safeguard may prevent a repeat, and separate recovery steps may still reduce the harm already done.
Everyday example
A club adds a backup routine after losing its only copy of the membership list, recognising that it cannot recover that file but can protect future records.
When to use it
Use it to distinguish prevention before an event from safeguards introduced after it.
What it does not mean
Late precautions can still prevent a repeat; recovery and accountability may also remain useful.
