You may be a wise man though you cannot make a watch.

You may be a wise man though you cannot make a watch.

Meaning in plain English

Lacking one specialised skill does not mean lacking sound judgement. Assess someone’s understanding in the relevant situation rather than treating an unfamiliar technical task as a complete test of wisdom.

What the words are saying

Watchmaking supplies an example of a particular demanding craft. The proverb allows a person to lack that craft while still having useful judgement elsewhere. It separates specialised ability from the broader question of how thoughtfully someone handles a situation. The saying should not diminish the expertise involved in making a watch or suggest that anyone can perform technical work without training. Its point is about the limits of the test, not the value of the skill. The useful question asks which knowledge the actual task requires and avoids turning one gap in ability into a judgement of the whole person.

Everyday example

A skilled gardener asks someone else to repair an unfamiliar timer without treating that need for help as a failure of their knowledge of plants.

When to use it

Use it when one missing technical skill is being used to dismiss a person’s judgement altogether.

What it does not mean

Respect specialised expertise; wisdom does not qualify someone to perform every technical task.
