The balance distinguishes not between gold and lead.

Meaning in plain English

A measure can register one property without recognising the differences that matter for another judgement. Equal weight does not mean equal value; choose evidence suited to the question.

What the words are saying

The balance responds to weight rather than the identity or value of the material placed on it. Gold and lead can therefore balance without becoming equivalent in every respect. The image warns against asking a single measure to answer a broader question than it can support. A count or score may be useful while leaving important qualities unexamined. The proverb need not reject measurement; it makes the limits of a measure visible. The useful response identifies what the instrument or comparison actually tells you, then obtains the other evidence needed instead of treating a matching number as proof of complete equivalence.

Everyday example

A librarian compares two collections with the same number of items but also checks their condition, accessibility and relevance before deciding which serves the readers.

When to use it

Use it when equal measurements are being mistaken for equivalence in every important respect.

What it does not mean

A measure can be useful within its purpose; do not discard valid evidence simply because it is incomplete.
