Meaning in plain English
Extensive learning does not guarantee sound judgement in every situation. Scholarship can be valuable while practical wisdom also requires understanding context, consequences and the limits of what one knows.
What the words are saying
The distinction is between the amount or depth of learning and the quality of a particular judgement. A person may know a subject well without making the best decision in an unfamiliar setting. Not always matters: the proverb does not dismiss scholarship or assert that less knowledge produces wiser choices. It asks whether the relevant understanding has been applied appropriately. Practical experience can add something useful, but it also needs scrutiny. The helpful response considers the evidence and the situation rather than relying entirely on a prestigious title or rejecting expertise simply because it does not answer every question.
Everyday example
A researcher asks local organisers about how a programme will operate in practice instead of assuming that subject knowledge alone resolves the planning details.
When to use it
Use it when academic standing is being treated as a guarantee of every practical judgement.
What it does not mean
Expertise remains valuable; its limits do not make unsupported opinions equally reliable.
Agent-assisted editorial interpretation. This explains the words; it does not by itself verify their author or earliest origin.
