Meaning in plain English

The people you regularly spend time with may reveal something about your interests and choices. Consider how a group influences you, while avoiding judgement based on association alone.

What the words are saying

Company means the companions a person chooses, rather than a business. The saying treats those relationships as a clue to character: repeated shared activities can show what someone values or is willing to accept. It invites reflection on the influence of a group and the conduct that becomes normal within it. The claim to tell who someone is goes too far if treated as complete proof. People may share a workplace, family or setting without sharing every belief. A fair judgement looks at the person’s own actions as well as the relationships they freely maintain.

Everyday example

A volunteer notices that a group regularly mocks newcomers and decides to join a different team whose members offer help instead.

When to use it

Use it to reflect on the influence of chosen companions and shared habits.
