Understand the thought
Meaning in plain English
You may not fully understand the difficulties another person carries. Avoid deciding how easy their situation should be from what is visible to you, and make room to hear their account.
What the words are saying
The burden represents demands, worries or responsibilities whose full weight is felt by the person carrying them. An observer may see the task without knowing its other consequences or the circumstances around it. The saying encourages humility when judging someone’s response. No one is emphatic rather than a reason to abandon understanding altogether: people can explain their experience, and careful listening can improve another person’s knowledge. The useful lesson is to ask before assuming, without requiring private disclosures as the price of being treated considerately. Visible performance alone does not reveal every difficulty behind it.
Everyday example
A coordinator asks whether a volunteer needs a different shift rather than assuming that missing one meeting means they do not care about the project.
When to use it
Use it to temper judgement when another person’s circumstances are only partly visible.
What it does not mean
Do not insist that someone disclose private difficulties before showing consideration; listening can still improve understanding.
