Understand the thought
Meaning in plain English
The experiences, habits and feelings of childhood help shape the adult a person becomes. The apparent reversal of parent and child is a metaphor for influence over time.
What the words are saying
A child cannot literally be the biological father of the same person's adult self. The paradox becomes understandable when 'father' means something that produces or shapes something else. The earlier stage of life gives rise to the later one. Childhood curiosity, fears, attachments and habits can continue into adulthood, sometimes in changed forms. The sentence therefore invites readers to take childhood seriously instead of treating it as an irrelevant period that adulthood completely erases.
Everyday example
A child who spends hours taking objects apart may become an adult who enjoys solving technical problems. The adult's interest has grown from, rather than appeared independently of, that earlier curiosity.
When to use it
Use it when discussing how early experiences relate to later character, interests or memories.

What it does not mean
Influence is not destiny. Adults can change, learn new habits and respond differently to their childhood experiences.
