Crafty evasions save not the truth.

Crafty evasions save not the truth.
Traditional

Meaning in plain English

Clever avoidance does not turn an inaccurate account into a truthful one. Consider whether an answer addresses the substance of the question rather than merely finding words that sidestep it.

Example

A contributor says that a document cannot yet be shared instead of giving a carefully worded reply designed to make others believe it has already been checked.

Deeper explanation and when to use it

The proverb challenges evasions that protect an appearance of truthfulness while leaving the important matter unanswered. A statement may be carefully worded yet still guide someone towards a misleading impression. The useful issue is not eloquence itself, but whether the listener receives an accurate account of what they reasonably need to understand. The saying does not require answering every intrusive question or disclosing confidential information. A clear boundary can be more honest than an elaborate diversion. Distinguish saying that a matter cannot be discussed from implying an answer that the speaker knows does not fairly represent the situation.

When to use it

Use it when technically careful wording is concealing rather than clarifying a material point.

Keep in mind

Privacy and confidentiality can justify a clear refusal; they need not be replaced by misleading evasions.
