The best lie is the worst.
The best lie is the worst.
Meaning in plain English
A convincing lie can be especially harmful because people are more likely to trust it. Best is an ironic description of successful deception, without proving that every false statement has the same consequences.
Example
A convincing mock notice about a cancelled rehearsal is forwarded without checking; the organiser corrects it and asks members to verify changes through the agreed channel.
Deeper explanation and when to use it
The proverb reverses the apparent praise in best: a lie that works well as deception may be worst in its effects. Its plausibility can make someone act on information they would reject if the falsehood were obvious. A useful reading examines both whether a statement is true and how its credibility affects those relying on it. The saying does not give a complete ranking of lies, and an honest mistake is different from deliberate deception. Intent, stakes and correction matter in assessing a particular case. Its warning is that polished presentation or persuasive detail cannot replace evidence for the underlying claim.
When to use it
Use it when persuasive presentation is making a false claim harder to question.
Keep in mind
An inaccurate statement may be a mistake; consider evidence, intent and consequences before calling it a lie.
