A word is enough to the wise.

A word is enough to the wise.
Traditional

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

Someone who understands the situation may need only a brief hint to act. Concise guidance can be enough when it connects with knowledge the listener already has.

What the words are saying

The wise listener is imagined as recognising what follows from a small amount of information. The proverb values attentiveness and understanding rather than repeated or elaborate instruction. It can be useful when shared context makes a reminder enough to identify the next step. It should not be used to shame someone who needs more explanation or to avoid giving essential details. Different people may know different parts of the situation. The useful condition is actual understanding: a short message works when its meaning is clear, not simply because the speaker assumes that an intelligent person ought to infer it.

Everyday example

An experienced organiser hears that the room has changed and immediately checks the access route, while explaining the new arrangement fully to volunteers who were not involved earlier.

When to use it

Use it when a concise hint connects with genuinely shared knowledge.

What it does not mean

Needing clarification is not a lack of wisdom; important instructions should be explicit when understanding is uncertain.

Agent-assisted editorial interpretation. This explains the words; it does not by itself verify their author or earliest origin.
