proverb · Words worth keeping
Zeal without knowledge is fire without light.
Zeal without knowledge is fire without light.

Understand the thought
Meaning in plain English
Enthusiasm without understanding can cause disruption without helping. Strong motivation becomes more useful when guided by knowledge of the task and its consequences.
What the words are saying
The fire has energy and heat but lacks the light that would help someone see. That image separates intensity from direction: a person may be eager to solve a problem while misunderstanding what needs to happen. The saying encourages learning, listening and checking the method before applying force or effort. It does not suggest that beginners must know everything before contributing. They can act usefully with guidance and a willingness to revise. The important difference is between enthusiasm open to instruction and enthusiasm that treats its own strength of feeling as sufficient evidence.
Everyday example
A volunteer eager to reorganise a collection asks how the catalogue works before moving books into an arrangement that would break its references.
When to use it
Use it when good intentions need information or guidance to become effective.
What it does not mean
Knowledge should guide action rather than become an excuse to exclude learners who can contribute with support.
