Wranglers never want words.

Wranglers never want words.
Traditional

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

A person intent on continuing a quarrel can keep finding things to say. The saying questions argument sustained for its own sake, without making disagreement, persistence or a request for explanation automatically unreasonable.

What the words are saying

The wrangler is pictured as having a continuing supply of words because the dispute itself provides the motive to keep speaking. In such a conversation, answering one objection may simply produce another rather than move toward an understood issue. The proverb can prompt a check on whether the exchange has an achievable purpose. It should not be used to label a person troublesome because they disagree or because an important concern remains unanswered. A useful response identifies the actual question, what would count as a resolution and whether a pause or different format would help, rather than assuming that more argument necessarily means more progress.

Everyday example

Housemates discussing a table position agree to compare two workable layouts against their access needs instead of answering a series of unrelated objections.

When to use it

Use it when an exchange appears to be extending conflict without clarifying a resolvable issue.

What it does not mean

Legitimate disagreement and unanswered concerns deserve attention; do not dismiss persistence by labelling the speaker.
