Wounds may heal, but not those made by ill words.

Wounds may heal, but not those made by ill words.

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

Cruel words can leave a lasting hurt even after the moment has passed. Think about their effect rather than assuming that speech is harmless because it leaves no visible mark.

What the words are saying

The proverb compares an injury that can be seen with an injury to trust, confidence or a relationship. Its emphatic contrast draws attention to the way a remark may be remembered and repeated inwardly long after it was spoken. The lesson is care in speech and responsibility when words have harmed someone. It is not a literal claim that emotional hurt never improves or that every physical injury heals. An apology and changed behaviour may help repair a relationship, while the person hurt decides what further contact or reassurance they need.

Everyday example

A teacher notices that a dismissive comment has made a pupil reluctant to ask questions, apologises and changes how she responds to mistakes.

When to use it

Use it to emphasise the possible lasting effects of humiliating or cruel speech.

What it does not mean

The comparison is rhetorical, not a rule about recovery; people can heal and may need support.
