Wise men are not caught by wiles.

Wise men are not caught by wiles.

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

Careful judgement can help someone notice a deceptive tactic before accepting it. The saying praises discernment, but its confident wording must not imply that capable people cannot be deceived or that being misled proves foolishness.

What the words are saying

Wiles suggests a cunning approach that tries to gain an advantage by misleading someone. The wise person is pictured recognising that approach rather than being caught by it. The claim is too absolute to describe every situation: deception can exploit trust, limited information or a well-designed false appearance. A useful reading asks what evidence supports the proposal and whether an independent check is available. It does not transfer responsibility for deception from the person using it to the person affected. The proverb can encourage attentive questioning while recognising that good judgement includes revising a belief when new information shows it was mistaken.

Everyday example

A club organiser checks a claimed supplier change through the contact details already on file rather than relying only on an unexpected message.

When to use it

Use it when a persuasive claim needs evidence or a separate check.

What it does not mean

Anyone can be deceived; responsibility for deliberate deception belongs to the deceiver.
