Will without reason is blind.

Will without reason is blind.
Traditional

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

Determination without a reasoned view of the situation may lead effort in an unsuitable direction. The saying asks for judgement alongside resolve, without treating enthusiasm as irrational or using its sight metaphor as a claim about visual disability.

What the words are saying

Will represents the drive to act, while reason represents the consideration that can guide it. Calling unguided will blind suggests that energy alone does not show whether a goal or method fits the circumstances. A person can be determined and still need to examine consequences, evidence or another person’s needs. This does not make feeling and commitment enemies of thought. Nor does reason require certainty before every action. The useful reading connects effort with an explanation of why this course is worthwhile and what might call for adjustment. It questions an unexamined direction rather than condemning strong motivation or equating disability with poor judgement.

Everyday example

A group is eager to build a garden bench, then checks the available space and intended users before choosing its size and location.

When to use it

Use it when determination has overtaken discussion of purpose, evidence or consequences.

What it does not mean

Motivation and judgement can work together; the metaphor should not demean visual disability.
