Understand the thought
Meaning in plain English
Wanting and deserving distinguished from one another separate desire from an asserted entitlement. The saying asks whether a wish itself supplies a reason for receiving something.
What the words are saying
The irregular wording is retained. A responsible interpretation does not treat an observer’s judgment of deservingness as a settled worth test. Needs, fair access and actual commitments matter, and not receiving a desired thing does not prove a person undeserving.
Everyday example
Someone discusses fair criteria for a shared resource rather than assuming either wanting it or being denied it settles entitlement.
When to use it
Use it to distinguish desire from supported claims with dignity retained.
