The loquacity of fools is a warning to the wise.

The loquacity of fools is a warning to the wise.

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

Excessive or poorly considered talk can show others what to avoid. The saying values learning from an unhelpful discussion, without making the amount someone speaks a reliable test of their judgement.

What the words are saying

Loquacity means an abundance of talk; the proverb treats it as a warning when it is attached to the figure it calls foolish. The useful issue is what the talk does. It may repeat an unsupported claim, fill the space needed for another contribution or distract from the actual question. An observer can learn from that pattern without assuming that an expressive person lacks understanding or that a quiet person is wise. A useful response identifies the particular problem and makes the discussion more workable. The proverb should not become an excuse to shame someone for speaking or to equate silence with good judgement.

Everyday example

A group notices that repeated speculation is crowding out confirmed information and sets aside a short time to check the facts before continuing.

When to use it

Use it when a specific unhelpful pattern in discussion offers a lesson for improving it.
