Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.

Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.
Traditional

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

Attend to the difficulties of the present without treating every possible future problem as already here. The saying limits the burden of anticipation, without discouraging useful preparation or promises of future support.

What the words are saying

The day is pictured carrying enough trouble of its own. Adding imagined troubles from later days can make the immediate task harder to see and the burden seem larger than what is actually present. A practical reading distinguishes a concern that can be addressed now from speculation for which there is no useful next step. It does not mean that planning is pointless or that a person can simply choose not to feel worried. The useful question is where attention can serve the present situation, while keeping real future responsibilities visible rather than either rehearsing every possibility or ignoring them altogether.

Everyday example

A stage manager deals with the props needed for today’s rehearsal and records next week’s tasks on a separate list instead of trying to complete both at once.

When to use it

Use it when possible future difficulties are obscuring the next useful task.

What it does not mean

Planning can be valuable; the saying is not a command to stop worrying or a treatment claim.
