Pity, promises, and blame, are always cheap and plentiful.

Meaning in plain English

Expressions of sympathy, assurances and criticism are easier to offer than practical help. Notice whether words meet the actual need or are being substituted for a useful contribution.

What the words are saying

The three items share a low immediate cost to the speaker. Someone can express pity, promise future assistance or point out a mistake without changing the difficult situation. The proverb can challenge a discussion full of reactions but short on action. It is not a claim that compassion or criticism has no value. Words can offer comfort, identify a problem or establish a meaningful commitment. The useful question is what follows them and whether the person speaking is able to help. The saying should not demand impossible assistance from someone whose resources are limited.

Everyday example

After hearing that the club’s equipment needs sorting, a member offers an hour on Saturday instead of adding another message about how unfortunate the mess is.

When to use it

Use it when abundant reactions or promises are leaving a practical need unanswered.
