Once a use and ever a custom.

Once a use and ever a custom.
Traditional · English

Meaning in plain English

Doing something once can create an expectation that it will continue. The saying warns about a precedent becoming customary, without proving that a single occasion permanently binds anyone to repeat it.

Example

A club opens late for one special event and tells visitors that the extra hour is an exception, rather than allowing the notice to imply a permanent timetable change.

Deeper explanation and when to use it

Once a use turns an individual action into the beginning of a pattern. Ever a custom exaggerates how readily people may treat that first occasion as the new normal. A useful reading clarifies whether an arrangement is temporary or ongoing, especially where others may rely on it. One favour or exception need not become a permanent obligation, and a continuing practice can be reviewed. The proverb differs from calling custom second nature: its emphasis is the expectation created by a precedent rather than an individual’s familiar routine. Clear communication can prevent an isolated choice from silently acquiring a larger meaning.

When to use it

Use it when a one-off arrangement might be mistaken for an ongoing practice.

Keep in mind

A precedent does not remove consent or prevent a later review of the arrangement.
