proverb · Words worth keeping
Much is expected where much is given.
Much is expected where much is given.
Understand the thought
Meaning in plain English
Greater resources or support can bring greater expectations about their use. The saying invites responsible consideration without making a gift an unlimited debt or granting the giver control over the recipient.
Example
A group receiving materials for a workshop agrees what report the provider needs before accepting them, rather than discovering later that an open-ended commitment was assumed.
Deeper explanation and when to use it
The repeated much links what is received with what others hope will follow from it. An opportunity, responsibility or shared resource can make a particular contribution more possible, and it may be reasonable to discuss that contribution. Expected does not establish an automatic entitlement to someone’s labour or decisions. A gift with undisclosed conditions is different from an agreement made clearly beforehand. The useful lesson is to clarify the purpose and scope of any expectation, taking capacity and circumstances into account rather than assuming that receiving help removes the recipient’s right to choose or set limits.
When to use it
Use it when resources and their associated expectations need a clear, fair agreement.
Keep in mind
Support does not create unlimited obligations; expectations should be explicit, proportionate and freely considered.
