Meaning in plain English

Everyday experience can reveal something you did not know. Treat a surprise or mistake as a chance to revise your understanding rather than pretending you already had every answer.

Example

A cook discovers that a borrowed oven runs hotter than expected and checks the temperature before using the same recipe again.

Deeper explanation and when to use it

The short phrase connects continuing life with continuing learning. It is often a light response to an unexpected discovery, especially one that changes a familiar assumption. The lesson may be small, such as finding a better way to do a routine task, or more substantial. Its value comes from noticing and using what was learned. Experience alone does not guarantee insight; someone can repeat the same error while refusing to reconsider it. The saying invites curiosity and an adjustment of judgement, without making every setback into something that ought to be welcomed.

When to use it

Use it lightly when a new experience has changed an assumption or taught a practical lesson.

Keep in mind

Not every harmful experience carries a useful lesson, and learning does not erase its cost.
