Like author, like book.
Like author, like book.
Meaning in plain English
A book can reflect something of the person who made it. Notice the connection between a work and its creator’s interests or manner without treating the text as a complete portrait of their character.
Example
A reading group recognises an author’s recurring interest in careful observation across several essays, while avoiding the assumption that every fictional speaker represents the author personally.
Deeper explanation and when to use it
The repeated like suggests resemblance: qualities associated with the author can appear in the book. That may include attention to a subject, an argumentative manner or a way of presenting an idea. The short proverb does not establish which qualities are meant in every use. Nor does a narrator, character or opinion in a work necessarily express the creator’s own conduct or beliefs. The useful reading considers a possible relationship between maker and work while looking at evidence for the particular claim. It should not turn a single passage into a sweeping judgement about someone’s whole life.
When to use it
Use it to discuss an evidenced resemblance between a creator’s concerns and their work.
Keep in mind
A work is not a complete biography, and fictional voices need not represent the creator’s personal beliefs.
