Meaning in plain English
Sound judgement can include choosing which matters deserve attention. The saying values proportion and restraint, without advising people to ignore important evidence, responsibility or harm.
What the words are saying
Taking no notice can mean declining to pursue a distraction or refusing to let every slight control a response. The many things in the proverb suggest that not every detail requires the same attention. A person may reasonably leave a minor annoyance alone to concentrate on what matters to the task. That is different from deliberately overlooking a serious concern. The useful question is why something is being set aside and what would follow from doing so. Selective attention can make room for better work or calmer dealings, but the label wise must not become an excuse for avoiding accountability or silencing someone’s warning.
Everyday example
A chair leaves a minor interruption unremarked but pauses the meeting when a participant raises a genuine access problem.
When to use it
Use it when a small distraction is threatening to consume attention needed elsewhere.
