If you’re riding in front of the herd, look back every now and then to see if it’s still there.

Understand the thought
Meaning in plain English
Looking back while ahead of a herd pictures leadership checking whether others remain with it. The saying asks for attention beyond one’s own forward position.
What the words are saying
The riding image can illustrate coordination rather than a livestock procedure. A useful application considers others’ information, capacity and consent instead of assuming they must follow. Leading is not proof that the route is right, and checking presence does not alone establish a good relationship.
Everyday example
A project organiser asks whether participants understand and can support the next stage before moving on.
When to use it
Use it to discuss leadership and coordination with participants’ agency respected.
