If you want a thing done, go; if not, send.

If you want a thing done, go; if not, send.
Traditional

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

Taking direct responsibility may help ensure that an important task is understood and completed. The saying favours personal action over merely sending someone, without proving that delegation is ineffective or that everything must be done alone.

What the words are saying

The contrast between go and send questions whether a person has left the work to someone else without enough attention to its requirements. A useful reading checks what needs doing, who can do it and how completion will be confirmed. Going personally may resolve an uncertainty, but suitable delegation can also work well. The person asking remains responsible for clear instructions and realistic support rather than assuming that passing on a request settles the matter. The proverb should encourage ownership of the arrangement, not distrust of colleagues or a demand to take over every task regardless of capacity.

Everyday example

A group leader confirms a delivery’s requirements with the volunteer collecting it and agrees a check-in, rather than assuming that a brief message has supplied everything needed.

When to use it

Use it when an important task needs clearer ownership or confirmation.

What it does not mean

Delegation can be effective; clear roles, support and communication matter more than doing everything personally.
