Hearts may agree though heads differ.
Hearts may agree though heads differ.
Meaning in plain English
People can care for one another while disagreeing in thought or judgement. A difference of opinion need not erase shared affection, respect or purpose.
Example
Two friends choose different books as the strongest account of a topic but continue discussing them with interest instead of treating the disagreement as a personal rejection.
Deeper explanation and when to use it
The hearts and heads stand for two kinds of agreement: feeling and thinking. The saying allows the first to continue even when the second is absent. Figuratively, friends or collaborators may hold different views yet still treat each other with care and work towards something shared. It does not require ignoring every disagreement or remaining close where conduct is harmful. Some differences affect trust, safety or what can be done together. The useful question is whether the particular disagreement prevents respectful connection, rather than assuming either that affection demands identical opinions or that affection alone resolves every important conflict.
When to use it
Use it when a difference of opinion is being mistaken for the disappearance of affection or respect.
Keep in mind
Some disagreements concern harmful conduct or essential boundaries; affection does not make every difference harmless.
