He who seeketh trouble never misseth it.

He who seeketh trouble never misseth it.
Traditional

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

Actively provoking conflict can make opportunities for it easier to find. The saying warns about searching for a quarrel, without implying that people who experience trouble chose it or are responsible for harm done to them.

What the words are saying

The seeker is imagined approaching situations with trouble as the thing to discover. If someone looks for an argument, ordinary disagreements can become occasions to escalate one. The never is rhetorical, not evidence that conflict will always follow or that every difficulty began with provocation. Many people encounter unwanted trouble without having sought it, and the proverb must not be used to blame them. A useful reading concerns an identifiable pattern of deliberately stirring a quarrel, rather than assigning motives from an outcome. It asks whether the person’s approach is helping resolve a real concern or merely creating another contest.

Everyday example

A club member repeatedly turns harmless scheduling differences into personal challenges; the chair redirects the discussion to the actual arrangements.

When to use it

Use it when a specific pattern of seeking or escalating arguments can be identified.

What it does not mean

Experiencing trouble does not prove that someone invited it; responsibility for harm belongs to those who cause it.
