He that waits for a dead man's shoes may go long enough barefoot.

He that waits for a dead man's shoes may go long enough barefoot.

Meaning in plain English

Depending on a benefit that will arrive only when another person is gone can leave you waiting indefinitely. Build your plans around available possibilities rather than a vacancy or inheritance you cannot control.

What the words are saying

The shoes represent a place or possession that someone else currently holds. Waiting for them to become available postpones the waiter’s own progress and may depend on an event with no reliable timing. The image is deliberately uncomfortable because it links expectation to another person’s absence or death. A modern interpretation should explain that dependence without encouraging anyone to wish for another’s misfortune. The useful point is to question whether an uncertain future benefit is carrying too much of a plan. Alternatives may be limited, but an expectation should still be recognised as uncertain rather than treated as something already secured.

Everyday example

A musician looks for other performance opportunities rather than assuming a place in a particular ensemble will open whenever its current player eventually leaves.

When to use it

Use it when an uncertain future vacancy or transfer is being treated as a dependable plan.

What it does not mean

Do not wish for another person’s misfortune or assume everyone has immediate alternatives; the concern is uncertainty and dependence.
