Meaning in plain English

Purchases often bring unwanted material along with what is wanted. The saying contrasts stones, bones and shells with an approving claim that ale contains only the desired purchase.

What the words are saying

The repeated list makes buying sound like accepting a mixture rather than acquiring a pure benefit. Its last line breaks the pattern to praise ale. That praise need not be adopted to use the broader image: examine the whole package, including burdens that accompany the valued part. The text’s playful exception is separate from any practical assessment of drinking.

Everyday example

A purchaser compares useful equipment with the storage and upkeep it also requires before agreeing to buy the lot.

When to use it

Use the list as an analogy about accompanying burdens.

What it does not mean

The final line is praise of a drink, not evidence of its benefits or freedom from consequences.
