Happy is he who knows his follies in his youth.

Meaning in plain English

Recognising your mistakes early can leave more time to change unhelpful habits. Treat that recognition as an opportunity to learn rather than a reason to define yourself by what went wrong.

What the words are saying

The proverb values becoming aware of one’s follies while there is still much life ahead. Follies are ill-considered choices or habits, not proof that a person is foolish in every respect. The point is the opportunity offered by recognition: an unnoticed pattern is harder to change than one that has been named. Youth makes the opportunity seem especially large, but insight later in life can also matter. The saying does not require regret over every experiment or unconventional choice. A useful response identifies a particular consequence and a workable adjustment instead of turning self-knowledge into a broad condemnation of oneself.

Everyday example

A new organiser notices that agreeing to every task leaves several unfinished, and begins checking available time before making another commitment.

When to use it

Use it when recognising a recurring mistake can support a practical change.

What it does not mean

Learning later in life remains valuable, and not every youthful experiment deserves to be called a folly.
