Understand the thought
Meaning in plain English
Careless decisions can create complications that others must patiently resolve. Value the work of untangling a problem, and notice what caused it.
What the words are saying
Tying and loosening knots contrast making a difficulty with resolving it. The saying assigns the first action to fools and the second to wise people, presenting judgement through what each action leaves behind. In practice, an avoidable complication may take longer to repair than it took to create. The useful focus is on conduct: unclear commitments, contradictory instructions or rushed changes may leave others with the unravelling. Calling someone a fool adds little to the repair. Identify the knot, work through its parts and change the process that produced it rather than treating patient cleanup as an unlimited obligation.
Everyday example
A volunteer issues conflicting room bookings in haste; another checks each commitment, contacts the affected groups and establishes one shared booking record.
When to use it
Use it when avoidable confusion has left others with careful repair work.
What it does not mean
Criticise the avoidable conduct rather than a person’s identity, and do not assume others must endlessly repair it.
