Fools think themselves wise to the very last.

Fools think themselves wise to the very last.
Traditional

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

A person may remain confident in a mistaken judgement instead of examining it. The saying criticises unearned certainty, without giving an observer a fair basis to dismiss someone permanently as a fool.

What the words are saying

To the very last makes the person’s confidence seem resistant to every chance for revision. The proverb can describe a pattern in which a speaker assumes their own judgement is sufficient even when the result or evidence calls it into question. That pattern must be identified rather than inferred from disagreement alone. A person may have reasons the listener has not heard, and the listener can be overconfident too. The useful reading makes room for checking and correction on both sides. It questions certainty that cannot engage with evidence, not a person’s worth or their right to contribute to a discussion.

Everyday example

A participant insists that an old timetable must be correct, then is asked to compare it with the current notice rather than relying on confidence alone.

When to use it

Use it when a specific claim resists a reasonable opportunity for examination or correction.

What it does not mean

Disagreement does not prove foolishness; examine evidence and remain open to correction yourself.
