Meaning in plain English

Kind or pleasing words cannot replace the practical help needed to meet a real need. Check whether reassurance is accompanied by the action the situation requires.

What the words are saying

The hungry cat makes the limit of speech concrete: praise or comfort is not food. Figuratively, a promise or sympathetic response may leave a practical need unchanged if no suitable action follows. Words can still matter by acknowledging the problem, clarifying an arrangement or helping someone ask for support. The proverb does not require a person to provide help beyond their capacity. Its useful concern is the gap between a pleasing response and what has actually been made available. Honest limits and a workable next step can be more valuable than generous-sounding assurances that leave everyone uncertain about what will happen.

Everyday example

After praising a volunteer’s work, an organiser confirms who will cover the task during their absence rather than offering encouragement as a substitute for an arrangement.

When to use it

Use it when reassuring language is being treated as though a practical need has already been met.

What it does not mean

Words can support action; helpers may have limits and should not promise what they cannot provide.
