Charity begins at home.

Charity begins at home.
Traditional · English

Meaning in plain English

Care and generosity should include the people closest to you. Helping elsewhere does not excuse neglecting responsibilities to those who depend on you in everyday life.

Example

A volunteer who is organising donations also checks that an elderly relative has the practical help they have been promising to arrange.

Deeper explanation and when to use it

Home represents a person’s immediate circle of responsibility. The saying can remind someone that public generosity loses force if they are indifferent to needs they can address nearby. Its usual constructive reading is that care starts close to home and can then extend outward. It should not be used to insist that only family or local people deserve help. Different needs and responsibilities can coexist. The proverb raises a question about consistency: whether the concern shown to strangers is also present in ordinary relationships, rather than making a complete rule about how every resource must be distributed.

When to use it

Use it to remind someone to include nearby responsibilities in their generosity.

Keep in mind

Beginning at home need not mean ending there; avoid using the saying to dismiss everyone outside your circle.
