Understand the thought
Meaning in plain English
A modest position with meaningful independence may be preferable to a subordinate place in a more prestigious setting. The head and tail contrast asks what influence and responsibility a role offers, rather than ranking people by status.
What the words are saying
The ass represents the less impressive association, while the horse represents the more admired one. Being its head or tail changes the comparison: leadership in a modest undertaking may offer more agency than membership at the edge of a prestigious undertaking. That preference is not universal. A supporting role can provide learning, fair rewards and a valuable contribution, while leadership can bring demands someone does not want. The useful choice considers the actual work, available influence and personal priorities. Neither the animal comparison nor a title establishes a person’s worth, and declining a grander name need not amount to rejecting worthwhile collaboration.
Everyday example
A designer chooses to guide a small community exhibition rather than accept a famous event’s role that allows almost no say in the design.
When to use it
Use it when prestige is being weighed against agency and the substance of a role.
