An ounce of discretion is worth a pound of wit.

An ounce of discretion is worth a pound of wit.
Traditional

Historical period not yet established

Meaning in plain English

A little careful judgement can be worth more than a great deal of cleverness. Knowing when and how to act may matter more than finding an impressive response.

What the words are saying

The ounce and pound exaggerate a comparison between discretion and wit. Discretion means sensitivity to the situation, including what should be said, done or held back. Wit can mean cleverness that is quick but insufficiently considerate. The proverb values a small amount of good judgement over a larger display of skill that misses the point or causes harm. It may be useful when a clever joke risks humiliating someone or an ingenious plan overlooks a basic need. The quantities are rhetorical; the saying does not rank intelligence against care as if only one could be present.

Everyday example

A presenter leaves out a witty anecdote after noticing that it would embarrass a colleague whose help the talk is meant to acknowledge.

When to use it

Use it when cleverness needs to be guided by tact and practical judgement.

What it does not mean

Tact should not become concealment of necessary information; discretion and candour can work together.
