A watched pot never boils.

A watched pot never boils.
Traditional · English

Meaning in plain English

Waiting can feel slower when you constantly monitor the thing you are waiting for. Redirecting your attention may make an unavoidable delay easier to tolerate, without changing its actual duration.

Example

After submitting a routine application, someone stops refreshing their inbox every minute and completes another task while waiting for the reply.

Deeper explanation and when to use it

A pot does eventually boil under suitable conditions, so never is an exaggeration about the experience of waiting. Repeatedly checking for progress can make every moment of a delay more noticeable. The proverb recommends not letting your attention become trapped by an event you cannot usefully hurry. It is not advice to leave cooking or other risky processes unattended. Nor does it mean every delay should be ignored. Check at sensible intervals, take action when action is possible, and distinguish useful monitoring from anxious repetition that provides no new information.

When to use it

Use it when repeated checking is making a necessary wait feel more frustrating.

Keep in mind

Keep appropriate safety checks and follow-up; the saying does not excuse ignoring a problem or leaving cooking unattended.
