A fool demands much, but he's a greater that gives it.

A fool demands much, but he's a greater that gives it.

Meaning in plain English

An unreasonable request does not become sensible merely because someone agrees to it. Consider whether what is being offered is workable and appropriate rather than accepting every demand under pressure.

What the words are saying

The saying shifts attention from the person demanding much to the person willing to give it. Its blunt labels criticise an excessive request and an unconsidered response. They should not be used to dismiss genuine need or insult someone who wants to help. Much is relative to the situation: a substantial contribution can be reasonable when it is available and useful. The practical question is whether the offer respects real limits and obligations. A clear discussion may reveal a smaller workable option, rather than treating either complete agreement or complete refusal as the only possible response.

Everyday example

A volunteer team explains that it cannot staff an entire extra event at short notice, then discusses which limited tasks could realistically be supported.

When to use it

Use it when a demanding request is being accepted without considering practical limits.

What it does not mean

A large request is not automatically unreasonable, and generosity is not foolish merely because it is substantial.
