Across the Plains, with Other Memories and Essays

Robert Louis Stevenson

Go to XII, A Christmas Sermon, and read the paragraph beginning To be honest alongside the surrounding discussion of patience and judging other people. This 1915 edition includes grim before condition and that after all, and says not be embittered where the 1901 anthology says not to be embittered. These substantive variants remain visible in the archive. The letter by Sidney Colvin is dated February 1892; that is not this printing’s date or proof of a quotation’s composition date.

Who it suits

Readers seeking the surrounding argument behind familiar remarks about work, hope and ordinary moral responsibilities.

Reading experience

Moderate; nineteenth-century prose, rhetorical generalizations and historical social assumptions. This is an Edsverb editorial guide, not a measured reading score.
