Maxims and Reflections

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Short reflections on thought, conduct and the arts in Saunders’s historical English translation. The 1906 edition is the source of Edsverb’s admitted numbered Goethe passages. Reading consecutive maxims gives more context than a single isolated sentence; this translation’s phrasing should not be mistaken for every modern rendering.

Who it suits

Readers who like returning to concise observations and comparing several passages at a time.

Reading experience

Moderate; compressed arguments and older English reward rereading. This is an Edsverb editorial guide, not a measured reading score.
