The Essays or Counsels, Civil and Moral

Francis Bacon

Short essays weigh competing considerations in public and private life. The older phrasing and historical assumptions invite careful reading rather than treating every maxim as current advice. For honesty, begin with “Of Truth” and its discussion of straightforward dealings and the attractions of falsehood. For opportunity, “Of Delays” weighs readiness against both premature action and waiting too long. For change, “Of Innovations” considers gradual reform and its different effects on people. For decisions, “Of Counsel” examines deliberation and the interests of advisers. These early modern arguments invite scrutiny of their political assumptions; they do not settle present choices or establish that the selected proverbs originated here. For anger, “Of Anger” examines reflection after a quarrel, allowing time and avoiding irreversible actions. Read critically: its prejudices about gender and age, and its discussion of revenge, are historical arguments rather than present guidance. For trust, “Of Friendship” explores frank conversation and substantive companionship. For reputation, “Of Praise” and “Of Honor And Reputation” distinguish merit from flattery and the attention it receives. Examine the essays’ social hierarchy critically; their judgments of rank are not reliable measures of anyone’s worth.
