Life and writing

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803–1882) was an American essayist, poet and lecturer. He began as a Unitarian minister in Boston before developing a career in lectures and essays. His first essay collection appeared in 1841 and includes Self-Reliance, History, The Over-Soul and Circles.

His writing connects independent judgement with education, nature and changing perspectives. Self-reliance is a recurring theme, but reading Emerson only as an advocate of individual independence misses his interest in relations between people and the wider whole. His essays also leave tensions unresolved rather than supplying a fixed set of rules.

Emerson opposed slavery and gave antislavery addresses, yet his writing also contains racial hierarchies. These positions need to be considered together: an emancipatory argument does not make every assumption in the surrounding work acceptable.

Reading this voice

Read a short passage as an invitation to examine the larger argument, not as a complete rule for living. Notice whether its source reference names a poem, an essay or an address. The selected passages below include both prose and poetry; the linked First Series contains essays, not all of Emerson’s writings. Bartlett’s historical wording remains intact, and the linked edition can differ in punctuation or presentation. The archive’s approximate 1842 date is an author-lifetime midpoint, not the composition date of each passage.
